There can be little doubt today that the otherworldly electronic sounds
of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and their ilk left an indelible scar in the minds of a generation of British kids who grew
up exposed to their toxic frequencies, insidiously beamed into the very heart of family life via the ever-present Cathode
Ray Tube in the corner of the living room.
But fifteen years ago their terrifying influence was not so widely acknowledged, either critically nor in the musical climate
of the period. Yet behind closed doors, private research was being undertaken that inadvertently allowed echoes of the past
(and future) to leak out...
For our second release, Bleepfiend has gained access to a selection of demo tapes that have never been heard outside the confines
of their creator's home. These tapes were recorded in the winter months of 1993/94, using antiquated analogue synthesisers.
The first tentative experiments were improvised pieces recorded direct to domestic cassette deck (track 3 is an example of
this). Shortly afterwards a small Fostex portastudio and cheap digital multi-fx unit were added to form the basis of a rudimentary
but usable multitrack home studio.
Initially intending to create 'ambient techno', The Artist was invariably drawn into a more anachronistic zone by the haunting
textures that spewed forth from those analogue beasts. Literally in awe of their formidable capabilities, The Artist allowed
his authority to be subsumed to the will of the machines. They imparted forgotten knowledge to him; drilling wormholes into
his psyche, gateways into the past through which fleeting memories and sensations could be felt. During the recording sessions,
time-zones collided. 1993 mingled with 1973 as past, present and future became one.
But The Artist never assembled these pieces into a collection, never sent a demo tape or played them for an audience of any
sort. Soon afterwards he upgraded to a full midi studio set-up and regained control of the creative direction. His early experiments
were simply forgotten, and for the past decade and a half the tapes have languished in storage, seemingly waiting for a reason
to exist.
This year the tapes finally passed into the hands of Bleepfiend, and we instantly understood the underlying purpose behind
these abandoned relics. And so, with The Artist's agreement, we have built a whole new conceptual framework and visual theme
in which to present this fascinating body of work. We do not intend to explain the concept to the listener. But if you were
there, and you lived through what we did, you will understand.
If not, too bad.
